Correct and Further the breakdown of the word is thus

Sh = SHU, He who rises up in The Air - Emptyness
Wa = WADJET, The Green One The Goddess
LUX = ILLUMINANCE
EL = Deity

SHU

In Egyptian mythololgy, Shu (meaning emptiness and he who rises up) is one of the primordial gods, a personification of air, one of the Ennead of Heliopolis.

He was created by Atum, his father and Iusaaset, his mother in the city of Heliopolis. With his sister Tefnut (moisture), he was the father of Nut and Geb. His daughter, Nut, was the sky goddess whom he held over the Earth (Geb), separating the two.
Shu's grandchildren are Osiris, Isis, Set  and Nephthys. His great-grandsons are Horus  and Anubis.

As the air, Shu was considered to be cooling, and thus calming, influence, and pacifier. Due to the association with air, calm, and thus Ma'at (truth, justice and order), Shu was portrayed in art as wearing an ostrich feather. Shu was seen with between one and four feathers.
In a much later myth, representing the terrible weather disaster at the end of the Old Kingdom, it was said that Tefnut and Shu once argued, and Tefnut left Egypt for Nubia (which was always more temperate). It was said that Shu quickly decided that he missed her, but she changed into a cat that destroyed any man or god that approached. Thoth, disguised, eventually succeeded in convincing her to return.
He carries an ankh, the symbol of life.

In Egyptian mythology, Wadjet , or the Green One; also spelled Wadjit, Wedjet, Uadjet or Ua Zit and in Greek, Udjo, Uto, Edjo, and Buto among other names), was originally the ancient local goddess of the city of Dep (Buto) which became part of the city that the Egyptians named Per-Wadjet, House of Wadjet, and the Greeks called Buto (Desouk now),  a city that was an important site in the Predynastic era of Ancient Egypt and the cultural developments of the Paleolithic. She was said to be the patron and protector of Lower Egypt and upon unification with Upper Egypt, the joint protector and patron of all of Egypt with the "goddess" of Upper Egypt. The image of Wadjet with the sun disk is called the uraeus, and it was the emblem on the crown of the rulers of Lower Egypt. She was also the protector of kings and of women in childbirth.
As the patron goddess, she was associated with the land and depicted as a snake-headed woman or a snake—usually an Egyptian cobra, a poisonous snake common to the region; sometimes she was depicted as a woman with two snake heads and, at other times, a snake with a woman's head. Her oracle was in the renowned temple in Per-Wadjet that was dedicated to her worship and gave the city its name. This oracle may have been the source for the oracular tradition that spread to Greece from Egypt.

The Going Forth of Wadjet was celebrated on December 25 with chants and songs. An annual festival held in the city celebrated Wadjet on April 21. Other important dates for special worship of her were June 21, the Summer Solstice, and March 14. She also was assigned the fifth hour of the fifth day of the moon.
Wadjet was closely associated in the Egyptian pantheon with Bast, the fierce goddess depicted as a lioness warrior and protector, as the sun goddess whose eye later became the eye of Horus, the eye of Ra, and as the Lady of Flame. The hieroglyph for her eye is shown below; sometimes two are shown in the sky of religious images. Per-Wadjet also contained a sanctuary of Horus, the child of the sun deity who would be interpreted to represent the pharaoh. Much later, Wadjet became associated with Isis as well as with many other deities.
In the relief shown to the above, which is on the wall of the Hatshepsut Temple at Luxor, there are two images of Wadjet: one of her as the uraeus sun disk with her head through an ankh and another where she precedes a Horus hawk wearing the double crown of united Egypt, representing the pharaoh whom she protects.

The name Wadjet is derived from the term for the symbol of her domain, Lower Egypt, the papyrus.
Her name mean "papyrus-colored one", as wadj is the ancient Egyptian word for the color green (in reference to the color of the papyrus plant) and the et is an indication of her gender. Its hieroglyphs differ from those of the Green Crown (Red Crown) of Lower Egypt only by the determinative, which in the case of the crown was a picture of the Green Crown  and, in the case of the goddess, a rearing cobra.

Eventually, Wadjet was claimed as the patron goddess and protector of the whole of Lower Egypt and became associated with Nekhbet, depicted as a white vulture, who held the same title in Upper Egypt. When the two parts of Egypt were joined together, there was no merger of the deities as often occurred, both beliefs were retained and became known, euphemistically, as the two ladies, who were the protectors of unified Egypt. After the unification the image of Nekhbet joined Wadjet on the crown, thereafter shown as part of the uraeus.
D10
Wedjat - Eye of Horus
The ancient Egyptian word Wedjat signifies blue and green. It is also the name for the well known Eye of the Moon,  which later became the Eye of Horus and the Eye of Ra as additional sun deities arose. Indeed, in later times, she was often depicted simply as a woman with a snake's head, or as a woman wearing the uraeus. The uraeus originally had been her body alone, which wrapped around or was coiled upon the head of the pharaoh or another deity
Depicted as an Egyptian cobra she became confused with Renenutet, whose identity eventually merged with hers. As patron and protector, later Wadjet often was shown coiled upon the head of Ra, who much later became the Egyptian chief deity; in order to act as his protection, this image of her became the uraeus symbol used on the royal crowns as well.
Another early depiction of Wadjet is as a cobra entwined around a papyrus stem, beginning in the Predynastic era (prior to 3100 B.C.) and it is thought to be the first image that shows a snake entwined around a staff symbol. This is a sacred image that appeared repeatedly in the later images and myths of cultures surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, called the caduceus, which may have had separate origins.
Her image also rears up from the staff of the "flag" poles that are used to indicate deities, as seen in the hieroglyph for uraeus above and for goddess in other places.

An interpretation of the Milky Way was that it was the primal snake, Wadjet, the protector of Egypt. In this interpretation she was closely associated with Hathor and other early deities among the various aspects of the great mother goddess, including Mut and Naunet. The association with Hathor brought her son Horus into association also. The cult of Ra absorbed most of Horus's traits and included the protective eye of Wadjet that had shown her association with Hathor.
When identified as the protector of Ra, who was also a sun deity associated with heat and fire, she was sometimes said to be able to send fire onto those who might attack, just as the cobra spits poison into the eyes of its enemies.  In this role she was called the Lady of Flame.
She later became identified with the war goddess of Lower Egypt, Bast, who acted as another figure symbolic of the nation, consequently becoming Wadjet-Bast. In this role, since Bast was a lioness, Wadjet-Bast was often depicted with a lioness head.
After Lower Egypt had been conquered by Upper Egypt and they were unified, the lioness goddess of Upper Egypt, Sekhmet, was seen as the more powerful of the two warrior goddesses. It was Sekhmet who was seen as the Avenger of Wrongs, and the Scarlet Lady, 418 a reference to blood, as the one with bloodlust. She is depicted with the solar disk and Wadjet, however.
Eventually, Wadjet's position as patron led to her being identified as the more powerful goddess Mut, whose cult had come to the fore in conjunction with rise of the cult of Amun, and eventually being absorbed into her as the Mut-Wadjet-Bast triad.
When the pairing of deities occurred in later Egyptian myths, since she was linked to the land, after the unification of Lower and Upper Egypt she came to be thought of as the wife of Hapy, a deity of the Nile, which flowed through the land.

LUX = Light, Illumination as in Let there be light.

"Let there be light" is an English translation of the Hebrew יְהִי אוֹר (yehiy 'or). Other translations of the same phrase include the Latin phrase fiat lux, and the Greek phrase γενηθήτω φῶς (or genēthētō phōs). The phrase is often used for its metaphorical meaning of dispelling ignorance.

Creation of Light, by Gustave Doré. The engraving depicts a literal representation of Genesis 1:1

EL = Diety These are the Seven Creative Principles which caused the expansion of intent into matter, These are The Seven Planets of The Solar System also referred to in Genesis as The Elohhim.

ʾĒl (written aleph-lamed, e.g., Classical Syriac: ܐܠ‎, Hebrew: אל‎, Arabic: إل‎ or Arabic: إله‎, cognate to Akkadian: ilu) is a Northwest Semitic word meaning "deity".

This is further seen in words that end is AN & ON.

El its Canaanite function is part of the following Pan-Theon..

  • Anat, virgin goddess of war and strife, sister and putative mate of Ba'al Hadad
  • Athirat, "walker of the sea", Mother Goddess, wife of El (also known as Elat and after the Bronze Age as Asherah)
  • Athtart, better known by her Greek name Astarte, assists Anat in The Myth of Ba'al
  • Baalat or Baalit, the wife or female counterpart of Baal (also Belili)
  • Ba'al Hadad (lit. master of thunder), storm god.
  • Baal Hammon, god of fertility and renewer of all energies in the Phoenician colonies of the Western Mediterranean
  • Dagon, god of crop fertility and grain, father of Ba'al Hadad
  • El Elyon (lit. God Most High) and El; also transliterated as Ilu
  • Eshmun, god, or as Baalat Asclepius, goddess, of healing
  • Ishat, goddess of fire. She was slain by Anat.
  • Kotharat, goddesses of marriage and pregnancy
  • Kothar-wa-Khasis, the skilled, god of craftsmanship
  • Lotan, the twisting, seven-headed serpent ally of Yam
  • Marqod, God of Dance
  • Melqart, king of the city, the underworld and cycle of vegetation in Tyre
  • Molech or Moloch, putative god of fire
  • Mot or Mawat, god of death (not worshiped or given offerings)
  • Nikkal-wa-Ib, goddess of orchards and fruit
  • Qadeshtu, lit. "Holy One", putative goddess of love. In modern times mistakenly thought to be a sacred prostitute; there is no evidence of sacred prostitution in ancient Canaanite cities
  • Resheph, god of plague and of healing
  • Shachar and Shalim, twin gods of dawn and dusk, respectively
  • Shamayim, (lit. skies) the god of the heavens
  • Shapash, also transliterated Shapshu, goddess of the sun; sometimes equated with the Mesopotamian sun god Shemeshwhose gender is disputed
  • Yaw (lit. sea-river) the god of the sea and the river, also called Judge Nahar (judge of the river)
  • Yahweh may exist as an ending of some Amorite male names, though the only Canaanite mention of Yahweh, found on the Mesha Stele, refers to the God of Israel, (after Moses who is Imemhotep via theft took away the Holy Ship from The Holiest of the Holies from Saqqara Memphis and used the magick therein to beguile the Hebrews into believing that it contained God, The Papyri of Ani The Kemetic work being editied to fit his mysoginistic view point and replace their Gods and Goddesess with a Particach Contol Matrix), contrasted with Chemosh.
  • Yarikh, god of the moon and husband of Nikkal

  • The Word Granted to Me from The Abyss is thus, True and Correct, numerically, kabbalistically, via The Atu of Tahuti, astrologically - in effect Magickally Thus it is Said and Known...

    Final Flight

    Final Flight

Midnights Myriad Shadows Dance Past My half shut eyes

    Moth floats to externals light
    And it all slows down
In what appears as a life time within this her final movements and moments of ecstasy

    Sweet...
    Sleep...
    Comes...

Across oceans where waves sleep like breathing giants
I drift in a boat of absent souls
This place is between life and death, little moves or stirs only breath

I see her ahead, this creature so small yet there is a light within her
Doors to the left and to the right, what portal will she take? In this land between life and death.

Four gates swing open between the two an there is nothing...
    Nothing approaches...
    No one is there...
    Not even a silent call...

From one is a burning furnace of entrancing warmth it has a glow that warms my closed eyes

From the other there is a illuminated way with brilliance of light that reflects more than the spectrum can display

She veers left towards that warm embrace

She veers right towards a rainbow of chance

And then the light she falls into and passes

    Leaving me...
    Alone...
    Gone...
    Memory...

She has climbed higher than most mortal men higher and higher she transform her form now most feminine, her back is arched with silver and golden stars aglow within her skin
Reborn as The Milky Way surrounded in plush deep blue velvet a curtain of space.

On and On as if never to end -
    Left Behind
    Her small sweet memory

The Flaming Lips - Time / Breathe (Reprise).wmv

Some say ook ook I say ook They did it justice!

The Flaming Lips cover Black Sabbath's War Pigs on Later

    Bat Tracks Trek

    Bat - Symbolism

Bats symbolize death and rebirth. Sometimes, they are known as the "Guardian of the Night." It is largely misunderstood and so therefore many of its symbolic meanings are inappropriately fear-based. The bat is a symbol of rebirth and death because it is a creature that lives in the belly of the Mother (Earth). From the womb-like caves it emerges every evening at dusk. And so - from the womb it is reborn every evening.

    A bat in flight.
It is also a symbol of communication because the Native Americans observed the bat to be a highly social creature. Indeed, the bat has strong family ties. They are very nurturing, exhibiting verbal communication, touching, and sensitivity to members of their group.

The bat is also associated with medicine. Bat medicine teaches us to release fear and any pattern which no longer fits in with our pattern of growth. A new beginning, trusting one's instincts, the bat is powerful medicine.

Much folklore around the world has cast the bat in a bad role. Perhaps the most familiar of this folklore to we in Western culture are the medieval witchcraft texts that described bats as familiars for witches and the old European lore which associated bats with vampires. Curiously, the old European association of bats to vampires occurred long before Europeans discovered the existence of the less common species of vampire bats in South America (the only continent where vampire bats are found). Also, note that the bat's "evil" reputation from those medieval texts clung to it far into the modern day, while cats, who got the same bad reputation in those texts, have since been redeemed and thrown in the "cute" category (going by popular generalizations, that is.) So, how did bats come to be seen as so "evil?" The prevailing theory seems to be that since bats are mostly nocturnal animals and would stay away from people, people simply were not familiar with these creatures, and often what is unfamiliar is misunderstood.

Bats are not always portrayed as evil in world mythologies. In Chinese folklore, for example, bats are a symbol of good fortune and luck. Folklore from Samoa, ancient Greece, the Kono peoples of Sierra Leone, and the Apache and Cherokee tribes all portray bats in a more favorable light.

An Epistle to The Gurus: Deepak Chopra, The Late Osho and Bernard Pullman of Destiny. Or just how many people can I offend

Once upon a time in a secret multidimensional location. Far Far away...

    Sat a Monkey Monk

His name is SatTatVat of The Cup Containing The Chalice of the Golden Gurus Urine.

That was a very long name indeed however, The Monk as he is generally called does take the Piss.

As he is Multimensional Endless of Omnidirectional Omniscient Omnipresent as an ascended monkey having scaled the heights of the Monkey Puzzle he does translocate over spiral time which is folded and bent so that no point in space information depth time could not be reached.

The Main point of his time spiral sliding was not to spread his quadruple loop infinity squared by a circle = (10°=1□): Beyond the comprehension of the lower degrees. As an Ipsissimus he is free from limitations and necessity and lives in perfect balance with the manifest universe..

His purpose was to truly take the piss out of the gilded gurus who had manifested on earth with the one goal of making money from the zombies and sheeples that claim to be Homo Sapiens.

His three favoured targets are Deepak Chopra who truly takes the piss.

Osho, who although now dead is not free from the karma he generated whilst thoroughly enjoying all the material goods, jewels and Rolex watches he could wear at the expense of the idiots who furnished his tax haven bank accounts.

And then there was a wHoly Tit who's male breast does spill forth rotten milk and contradiction. His name was Bernard Poolman a South African FUD who uses the most obvious mind control exercises to beguile numerous cabbages into truly becoming bald apes and listening to his hate filled diatribe.

The Monk did feel somewhat responsible for some of Bernard's idiotic rants, it was after all he who had convinced Bernard that the i magi nation was dangerous, which it is if you are an evil cultist following a Nazi Socialist agenda, and of course The Toothless Gets Ruthless mirth when the Poolman told his slack mouthed converts and the world that he was going to remove all his teeth and through the power of GOD will have them grow back.

Bernard must of asked his wide eyed seer to double check this probability afterwards, possibly via the Sucker Test of Channeling toilet paper.. Any ways what ever occurred in that lead lined room someone must of gained a flash of samadhi from a more compassionate Bodhisattva than The Monk for he never did walk the talk* which runs like Holy Chao Shite from his mouth.

    Pity..

*Fairly typical of The Worldy Gurus to Do as They Do and Not as They Dictate.

The Monk was actually the same being who devised the popular mantra -

AumNgManiPadmeHuNg which seems to have been picked up by so many of the bleating sheep as to show how dangerous a lack of originality is... (Meanwhile in Nirvana, Smoking a Spliff, Prince Siddhartha Gautama would be rolling in his tomb, if it was not for the fact that he is in Nirvana and Rolling Spliff to get over his biggest regret that when he was asked what enlightenment was he, had simply smiled in that stoner proto-hippy fashion and held up a five petalled orange flavoured Lotus Blossom..

Oh yes he is rolling for what he really should of said is....

["It is difficult to express as I am ripped out my melon; I have a serious case and dose of the paranoia munchies and whatever you fuckers do Please Please accept this is my world view, this is my fucked up idea and you really should question everything, especially me, and additionally please know this is my philosophy. So DO NOT WAIT UNTIL I AM DEAD AND START ANOTHER FUCKING RELIGION.]**!

**It is of note here that the majority of religions if not all of them started out as a really NICE idea in the head of some traumatised human who's conditions vary from schizophrenic, to just very very high and were robbed after death by homophobic, power hungry, misogynistic, narcissistic sociopaths, i.e. The Likes of The Church fathers.***

***Here The Monk truly feels The Slip of The Banana Peel as it was he who had paid visit to Saul, (latterly Paul), whilst smuggling Hemp in a parallel time spiral and fractal dimension, upon the road to Damascus.

Anyway - The Monk did not actually say aforementioned Mantra due to his speech defect and he was also, at that time trapped in the body of an illiterati artist come cross dresser named Willi of The very shakey yet Floppy Spear who had been arrested for touching the botty of some English Fop Lord when inebriated in a Stratford Tavern.

What William used as a medium for the mantra was his own excrement on the cell wall. And while William thought he was writing in his own illiterate style, "Aum many penis hunny".. Well you can see how this rolls 32 Degrees of Masonic + 1 extra layer on a Scroll.

To get to the Paradoxical Pointless Point.

The Monk's Fourth most favourite person to visit is myself.

To my eyes he is a grumpy surly 2 Assed Monkey who has taught myself an awful lot via The Cosmic Midnight Joker.

And while he only ever utters an OOK or an OOK OOK; truly he has shown myself vistas of eternal probability in a fashion far more stimulating and spiritual than any dry old book, chat or irritating social media feed than any of the aforementioned Gurus, Saints, Martyrs, Religious Leaders and ridiculous cultists.

So a great big Yellow Banana, (In a Extremely Offensive Cock Shape in direct contravention of European and FDA rules), of Thanks and Bleesings.

And so back to The Solar Phenomena at Abu Simbel February 22nd 2012. To Celebrate the Rising of The Dawn Sun upon The Temple of Ramses II

Many scholars argue that Egyptian Astronomy did not leave any particular inheritance because it was less sophisticated than the Babylonian and the Greek. In reality, bear in mind that Egyptian astronomical observations began in the third millenium BCE, while the Babylonian and the Greek Astronomical Observations in the modern sense begin to grow from 500 BCE to 300 BCE. Synchronistically in 525 BCE Egypt was occupied by Perisa. In 332 BCE, when Alexandria was the cultural centre for excellence of the known world. These two foreign dominations allowed and exchange of culture and information without these historical precedents and as demonstrated by the, "Zodiac of Denderah," an important step forward for the Science of Astronomy.

The Abu Simbel Solar Phenomenon is an amazing event, The Sun Rising on the 22nd of February and 22nd of October every year to penetrate The Great Temple of Abu Simbel and cross all the way through the veil to the Holies of Holies The Inner Sanctum. The suns rays then fall on the faces of Ramses II statues.

On the day we were there my Father, Sayed, Noor and I there was easily 30,000 souls there it is a Festival of Light. And these souls had travelled from the four quadrants of the earth yet mostly from all over Egypt, yet particularly from the Nubian People's who so rightly should be proud of their heritage and their Royal ancestors.

The original dates of the phenomenon was but one day earlier, The 21st of February and The 21st of October. The temples here of Ramses and his favoured Queen Nefertiti were moved to avoid the flooding of Lake Nasser when building the Aswan Dam.

Sadly many Nubian Holy places and Temples are now lost under that lake.

Either way the original dates are either, (depending on which HIS-Tory.. You wish to subscribe to,) his coronation day, his birthday or the starting and ending of the Egyptian agricultural seasons.

During its original construction the axis of the Temple was positioned by the ancient architects towards a point on the eastern horizon in such a way that the rising suns photons on both these dates would raise above the mountains on the far far away side cross the waters, enter the Temple and fall upon the statues of Ramses II, Amon RA, (The Sun God), RA - Horakhte, (God of The Rising Sun, whilst in the shadows Ptah, ( God of the Underworld and Darkness), on the left of Ramses,  lo remains in Darkness.

The sun rises across Lake Nasser as 30,000 plus await the Rays.

The Temple of Abu Simbel to the Left and The Temple of his favoured Queen Nefertiti is to the Right.

The Suns Rays are Blinding as they pierce the Darkness of The Temple.

As a result of the inclination of The Earths rotation upon her axis to the plane of The Earths Orbit in a Year, we know that The Sun changes it's position of rising on The Eastern Horizon every day all over the year between 23.5 degrees North and 23.5 degrees south - The Direction of The East.

The ancient architects should know very well the annual apparent motion of The Sun around The Earth as to be able to adjust the direction of the Temple axis with the Sunrise position for any day, specifically the 22nd of February and the 22nd of October. This they did, also the Rays falling perfectly upon entering the entrance to The Temple then travel 60 metres and fall upon the faces of Ramses II and avoid The Statue of Ptah, this all indicates an accurate geometry in adjusting the dimensions of the entrance and the Inner Sanctum as well.

The Ending of Hiding in Hadit; and Blessing and Worship to The Prophet of The Lovely Star

We are told in II:75 to "listen to the numbers & the words": the Hebrew for "numbers", SPRVTh, suggests that the numbers of the puzzle relate to the Sephiroth. Therefore, we take the first four numbers as indicating the Sephiroth: ChSD, ThPARTh, BINH, and HVD.

Taking the initials (that is, forming a notariqon), we have Ch+Th+B+H = 415. The closeness to the "magick" number 418 makes it inevitable to add the Hebrew values of the next two letters, AB. Thus, the first six symbols can be made to give the value 418.

    Now we take the next eight symbols: K 2 4 A L G M O, and attempt a similar derivation. Take K in full as KP = 100. The numbers 2 and 4 are again read as Sephiroth: ChKMH = 73 and ChSD = 72. "A" is read as an Atu number, and is thus Zero. L is read in full as LMD = 74. G is 3. M is MIM = 90. And the "O" is read as a Vau = 6. Hence, 100 + 73 + 72 + 0 + 74 + 3 + 90 + 6 = 418.

Repeating the pattern of six symbols and then eight: we take R 3 Y X 24 89. R is 200. Reading "3" as BINH, the initial gives us 2. Taking "Y" as Yod yields 10. The "X" presents difficulties, as it is not clear how to treat it as a Hebrew letter: instead, the sign in the manuscript is treated as a skewed "+" sign. "24" and "89" cannot be treated as Sephirotic numbers, being too large: instead, they are treated as Paths between the relevant Sephiroth. Thus "24" is the Path between Chokmah And Chesed, which is Vau = 6. And "89" is the Path between Hod and Yesod, which is Resh = 200. This gives: 200 + 2 + 10 "plus" 6 + 200 = 418.

Of course, the remaining eight symbols have a known solution provided by Crowley: reading Shin and Teth as Atu numbers gives us the familiar RPShTOVAL = 418.

Thus the puzzle yields a fourfold repetition of the number 418. Is there any textual warrant for such a pattern? Perhaps. AL I:51 tells us "There are four gates to one palace ...", and we find in Liber DCCCXIII 2:11 "For mine was the keyword to the Closed Palace 418 ...". Taken together, these suggest a fourfold use of the word/number 418, which the above derivation shows to be potentially implicit in the Puzzle of the numbers & the words.

Of course, this derivation, with its arbitrary use of qabalistic mechanisms, lacks the clarity to be expected of a true solution: but it is an interesting exercise (I hope) in seeing how a meaningful pattern can be abstracted from the semantic "noise" of the perennial enigma of II:76.

    CLAN LAMONT

    BADGE: Luidh Cheann (octopetala) dryas
    PIBROCH: Spaidsearachd Chaiptein Mille Laomainn
Among the clans of the West Highlands which appear to be able to claim actual descent from early Celtic stock, Clan Lamont may be considered one of the most assured. There is some reason to believe that the Lamont chiefs were originally a branch of the great house of O'Neil, kings of Ulster in early times. The hand surmounting the old Lamont crest is pointed to as being undoubtedly the "Red hand of Ulster", and the Lamont motto, "Nec parcas nec spernas", is also pointed to as indicating the close relationship, while the documents of early times which refer to the Chief as "The Great Lamont of Cowal" seemed to indicate a relationship with the Ulster title of "The Great O'Neil". The name Lamont appears to date from the middle of the thirteenth century. One feudal charter of that time was granted by "Laumanus filius Malcolmi, nepos Duncani, filius Fearchar", conveying lands at Kilmun and Lochgilp to Paisley Abbey, while another, dated 1295, is by "Malcolmus filius er haeres domini quondam Laurnani". It is from this Lauman that the later chiefs take their name, and are styled MacLaomainn. Before the date of these charters the chiefs are said to have been named Mac'erachar from their early ancestor, Farquhar, grandfather of Lauman, who lived about the year 1200. In any case, from a very early time the Lamonts appear to have possessed the greater part of Cowal, and the ruins of several of their strongholds still remain to attest their greatness.
The beginning of their eclipse may be dated from the middle of the fourteenth century. In 1334, when Edward Baliol had overrun Scotland, basely acknowledging Edward III of England as his suzerain, and when, as a consequence of the battles of Dupplin and Halidon Hill, it had looked as if all the labours and victories of Robert the Bruce had been in vain, Bruce's young grandson, Robert the High Steward, suddenly turned the tables. From hiding in Bute he escaped to Dunbarton, raised his vassals of Renfrewshire, and stormed the stronghold of Dunoon. This was the signal for the Scots to rise, and before long Scotland was once more free. Among those who helped the High Steward on this occasion, was Sir Colin Campbell of Lochow, and when Robert the Steward became King Robert II in 1371, he made Campbell hereditary keeper of his royal castle of Dunoon. From that day the Campbells used every means to increase their footing in Cowal, and before long a feud broke out between them and Clan Lamont, the ancient possessors of the district, which was to end, nearly three centuries later, in one of the most tragic incidents of Highland history.
One of the first episodes of the feud took place in the year 1400. The King's court was then at Rothesay Castle, and from it, one day, three young lords crossed over to hunt at Ardyne in the Lamont country. As a sequel to their excursion, they tried to carry off some of the young women of Cowal; at which four sons of the Lamont Chief came to the rescue and slew the ravishers. A garbled account of the incident was carried to the court, and as a result, the King confiscated the Lamont territory in Strath Echaig, and conferred it on the Campbell chief.
Forty years later another incident occurred in which the generosity of the chief of Clan Lamont was turned to account by his enemies. Celestine, son of Sir Duncan Campbell the Black Knight of Lochow, had died while being educated in the Lowlands. It was winter, and by reason of the deep snows, Campbell professed to find it impossible to convey the body of his son through the mountain passes to Loch Awe. He accordingly asked permission from the Lamont chief to bury his son in the little Lamont kirk at Kilmun on the Holy Loch. Permission was granted in terms thus translated from the Gaelic: "I the Great Lamont of all Cowal do give unto thee, Black Knight of Lochow, the grave of flags wherein to bury thy son in thy distress". Soon afterwards the Campbell chief endowed the burial-place of his son as a collegiate church, and from that day to this Kilmun has remained the burial-place of the Argylls. In 1472 Colin, Earl of Argyll, obtained a charter of further lands about Dunoon Castle, including the West Bay and Innellan, and the stronghold of Dunoon appears forthwith to have become a chief seat of the Argylls.
Still the Lamonts appear to have been willing to act the friendly part to the Campbells. In 1544, when Henry VIII was seeking to annex Scotland by forcibly obtaining possession of the infant Queen Mary, and when, to support the enterprise, the Earl of Lennox sailed with an English fleet up the Firth of Clyde, the Lamonts mustered to help the Campbells in defending the stronghold of Dunoon. On that occasion Lennox landed under cover of the fire from his ships, forced the Lamonts and Camp bells to retreat with much slaughter, burnt Dunoon, and plundered its church.
A pleasant contrast to that episode was the visit of Queen Mary herself nineteen years later. The Countess of Argyll was the Queen's favourite half-sister, and it is narrated how Mary, then twenty-one years of age, on July 26th rode from Inveraray and slept at Strone, a Lamont seat; how, next morning, she came to Dunoon, where she spent two days in hunting, and signed several charters; and how on the 19th she rode to Toward Castle, where she dined with the chief of Clan Lamont, Sir John Lamont of Inveryne, before ferrying across to Southannan at Fairlie, on the Ayrshire coast. On that occasion the,Queen may have been entertained with music from the famous ancient Celtic harp, which was a treasured possession of the Lamonts for several centuries. About the year 1640 this harp passed by marriage into possession of the Robertsons of Lude, and it is described and illustrated in Gunn's elaborate work on the music of the Highlands.
It was a few years after this that an event occurred which throws a vivid light upon the chivalric character of these old Highland chiefs. The incident took place either in 1602 or 1633. The tradition runs that the son of a Lamont chief had gone hunting on the shores of Loch Awe with the only son of MacGregor of Glenstrae. At nightfall the two young men had made their camp in a cave, when a quarrel arose between them, and in the sudden strife Lamont drew his dirk, and MacGregor fell mortally wounded. Pursued by MacGregor's retainers, the aggressor fled, and, losing all idea of his way in the dark, and at last espying a light, applied for shelter at MacGregor's own house of Glenstrae. The old chief was stricken with grief when he heard the tale, and guessed it was his own son who had been slain. But the Highland laws of hospitality were inexorable. "Here this night", he said, "you shall be safe"; and when the clansmen arrived, demanding vengeance, he protected young Lamont from their fury. Then, while it was still dark, he conducted the young man across the hills to Dunderave on Loch Fyne, and procured him a boat and' oars.
"Flee", he said, "for your life; in your own country we shall pursue you. Save yourself if you can! "
Years afterwards an old man, hunted and desperate, came to Toward Castle gate and besought shelter. It was MacGregor of Glenstrae, stripped of his lands by the rapacious Campbells, and fleeing for his life, Lamont had not forgotten him, and he took him in, gave him a home for years, and when he died, buried him with all the honour due to his rank in the little graveyard about the chapel of St.Mary on the farm of Toward-an-Uilt, where his resting-place was long pointed out.
As is well known, the Campbells had been engaged for over a century in making themselves masters of the ancient lands of Clan Gregor, and it may be that this act of hospitality to the old MacGregor chief formed the last drop in the cup of the ancient feud which brought destruction upon Clan Lamont.
The story of the final act of the feud was told lately by Mr. Henry Lamond, a member of the clan, in the pages of the Clan Lamont Journal for 1913. The original account is to be found in the charge of high treason and oppression brought against the Marquess of Argyll in 1661, included in Cobbett's Complete Collection of State Trials, vol.5; The author of this account rightly says that, while the massacre of the MacDonalds of Glencoe in 1692 still sends a shudder through the veins of the reader of history, not less horror would attend a perusal of the Dunoon massacre, were it as generally known. As a matter of fact, the massacre of the Lamonts by the Campbells at Dunoon was a much more dreadful affair than even the massacre of the MacDonalds by the Campbells at Glencoe. The incident took place after the defeat of the forces of King Charles I under the Marquess of Montrose at Philiphaugh in 1646. By that victory the Marquess of Argyll, chief of the Campbells and of the Covenanting party in Scotland, became absolute ruler of the kingdom, and he forthwith proceeded to use his powers for the destruction of three of the clans from whom his family had been engaged in seizing lands and power for several centuries bygone. First the MacDonalds were stormed and massacred in their stronghold of Dunavertie at the south end of Kintyre; then the MacDougals saw their last castles of Gylen and Dunolly overthrown and given to the flames; and, last of the three, the Lamonts were attacked and well-nigh exterminated in their own region of Cowal.
Sir James Lamont of Inveryne, knight, then chief of the Clan, had been educated at Glasgow University, had represented Argyllshire in the Scottish Parliament, and had been King Charles commissioner and a friend of the Marquess of Montrose. In fairness to Argyll it should be mentioned that the commission to Sir James, given under the hand of King Charles I in March, 1643, authorised and ordered him to prosecute a war and levy forces in His Majesty's name against those in rebellion, and particularly against the Marquess of Argyll, and that, in accordance with this commission, Sir James had gathered together his friends and followers. But upon the king's surrender to the Scottish army at Newcastle, Lamont had laid down arms and retired peaceably to his own houses of Toward and Ascog. The indictment goes on to relate how, after the overthrow of Montrose at Philiphaugh, James Campbell of Ardkinglass, Dugald Campbell of Inverawe, and other officers, under the order of the Marquess of Argyll, laid siege to these two houses. On the third of June, Lamont surrendered upon conditions, signed by seven of the Campbell leaders, which granted indemnity to the Lamonts in person and estate, with power to pass freely where they pleased. But no sooner were the strongholds yielded than the Campbells proceeded to plunder them utterly, and to waste the whole estates and possessions of the Laments, doing damage to the extent of £50,000 sterling, and in the course of their operations murdering a number of innocent women, whose bodies they left for a prey to ravenous beasts and fowls. While the plundering was going on, Sir James and his friends and clansmen were kept guarded in the house and yards of Toward, with their hands cruelly bound behind their backs in the greatest misery. The Campbells next burned Ascog and Toward to the ground, threw their prisoners into boats, and conveyed them to Dunoon. There they hanged thirty-six persons, most of them gentlemen of the name of Lamont, upon a growing ash tree behind the churchyard. The rest, to the number of over two hundred and fifty, they stabbed with dirks and skeans at the ladder foot, and cast, many being still living, spurning and wrestling, into pits, where they were buried alive. So much did the horror of the circumstances impress people's minds, that it was said the tree withered and its roots ran blood, till the Campbells at last found it necessary to "Houck out the root, covering the hole with earth, which was full of the said matter like blood".
Sir James Lamont himself was spared, and being carried to Inveraray, was forced to sign a paper declaring that he himself had been in the wrong; and he was afterwards kept a close prisoner at Dunstaffnage, where, under a threat of being kept in the dungeon "until the marrow should rot within his bones", he was forced to sign a deed yielding up his estates. He was also made to sign a bond for 4,400 merks as payment for his four years' entertainment in the castle. He was afterwards imprisoned at Inisconnell in Loch Awe, and in Stirling Castle, and was only liberated when Cromwell overran the country in 1651.
This act of massacre and oppression against Clan Lamont formed the chief item upon which Argyll was charged after the Restoration, and if it were for nothing but this alone, he may be held to have richly deserved his fate when his head fell under the knife of the "Maiden".
The massacre, however, had meanwhile exercised a farreaching effect upon the fortunes of the clan, many of whom, harried and driven from their lands, had been forced to assume other names, so that to the present hour there are many Browns and Blacks and Whites both in Cowal and elsewhere, who are of pure Lamont descent.
The incident of the massacre, terrible as it was, had been all but forgotten by everyone except the Lamonts themselves and a few people who took an interest in the history of Cowal, till, a few years ago, the Clan Society was formed, and set about erecting a monument on the spot where so many of the clansmen had suffered a violent death.
Sir James Lamont was reinstated in his property in 1663, but Toward Castle was never rebuilt by the Lamont chiefs, and stands a sad ruin yet among its woods. The modern Toward Castle was built by Kirkman Findlay, the famous East India merchant of Napoleonic times. The later seat of the Lamont chiefs was Ardlamont House, on the promontory between Tignabruaich and Loch Fyne, but following a notorious murder which took place there during the occupancy of some English tenants, about the beginning of the twentieth century, the estate was sold, and the chief of the clan now resides principally at Westward Ho in Devonshire.
The present Chief, twenty-first of the name, is Major John Henry Lamont of Lamont, and he has a record behind him of hard fighting in the great Afghan War, in which he took part as a lieutenant in command of a troop of cavalry in the famous march under Lord Roberts to the relief of Kandahar: and the crushing defeat of Ayoub Khan. Major Lamont is a famous polo player, steeplechase rider, and follower of hounds, and the only regret of his clansmen is that he no longer lives upon the acres of his ancestors. He is unmarried, and his apparent successor in the chiefship is Edward Lewis Lamont, Petersham, N.S.W., Australia, a great-grandson of the eighteenth chief. He is the eldest son of the late Edward Buller Lamont of Monidrain, Argyllshire, and grandson of the late Captain Norman Lamont, Member of Parliament for Wells Somersetshire, who was second son of the eighteenth chief: He is unmarried, but has numerous nephews to support the chiefship of the clan. The only landed man of the name now in Cowal is Sir Norman Lamont, Baronet of Knockdow. His father, the first baronet, who died on 29th July 1913, in his eighty-sixth year, was the only son of Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Lamont of Knockdow, whom he succeeded as laird in 1861. Sir James, who as a young man held a commission in the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, was a noted big-game hunter in Africa, and had a story of strange adventures in Greece, Egypt, and Turkey, In his own yachts, the Ginevra and the Diana, he made several expeditions to the Polar seas which, though their primary object was sport, resulted in some valuable contributions to geographical and other knowledge. He published accounts of his adventures in two racy books.
Seasons with the Sea-Horses and Yachting in the Arctic Seas, and in 1912-3, over the signature "84", he published a series of ten articles of sporting reminiscences which attracted a great deal of attention. He was also for a time member of Parliament for Bute, for which also his elder surviving son, the present baronet, was member from 1905 till 1910.
Among many other members of the clan who have distinguished themselves may be cited David Lamont, D.D., who was chaplain to the Prince of Wales in 1785, Moderator to the General Assembly in 1782, and appointed chaplain in ordinary for Scotland in 1824; also Johann von Lamont, the astronomer and magnetician of last century, who was Professor of Astronomy in the University of Munich, and executed the magnetic surveys of Bavaria, France, Spain, North Germany, and Denmark. The work of John Lamont, the diarist of the seventeenth century, also remains of great value to the Scottish genealogist.
The latest evidence of the clan's activities is the Clan Lamont Society, instituted a few years ago, which is now a flourishing institution in the West of Scotland. Its inception in 1895 was largely due to Lieutenant-Colonel Lamont, V.D., a descendant of the MacPatrick branch of the clan. Colonel Lamont is the author of a brochure on the Lamont tartan, which has attracted wide notice among students of these things, and is of the deepest interest to the clan.
